Day 14: Arrival in Kolkata and overnight

For those of you who are joining the One-horned Rhinoceros Extension you will transfer to Delhi airport from where we will fly to Kolkata and spend the night before the start of this extension.

Day 15: Kolkata to Kaziranga via Guwahati

Today we leave Kolkata as we fly to Guwahati. Upon arrival at Guwahati, we will transfer by road to Kaziranga National Park – this drive takes approximately 3 hours.
Kaziranga1
Home to the densest concentrations of game within the subcontinent, Kaziranga National Park can easily boast a comparison to the plains of East Africa. The park is set against the impressive backdrop of the snow-capped Himalayas and is comprised of mainly riverine grassland bordered by forested areas. The vast expanse of the park stretches from the banks of the Brahmaputra River to the dense forests of the Mikir Hills.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kaziranga is famous for its healthy populations of armour-plated Great Indian Rhinoceros (One-horned Rhinoceros), heavily muscled Gaur (Indian Bison) and troops of Asian Elephant. Kaziringa’s other star mammal is the splay-horned Water Buffalo, and although the domesticated version of this species is quite common in India, its wild cousin is now one of India’s rarest mammals.

Days 16 – 18: Kaziranga

Early each morning we set off on an elephant safari, and in the afternoon in an open jeep for some up close and personal encounters with Rhinos and viewing these otherworldly creatures in the morning mist makes for thrilling encounters.

Though we would need to be lucky to come across Tiger, they do occur in good numbers and form the only natural enemy of the Indian Rhinoceros. Other predators include Leopard, Sloth Bear and various species of smaller cats, mongoose, civets, foxes and weasels. Besides the typical Indian mammals, we will search for the endangered Swamp Deer known as Barasingha, Hog Deer and Assamese Macaque. The Gangetic Dolphin may also be encountered on the larger rivers.

A visit to Panbari Forest allows an opportunity to find India’s only ape, the Hoolock Gibbon. The whooping romantic duet of these canopy swinging songsters is perhaps one of the most evocative sounds of these Indian rainforests. Capped Langurs are common but we would be very fortunate to find any of the other specialist forest creatures.

We might also get a chance to visit the nearby village inhabited by the Mishing tribe.

Birding in Kaziranga is a treat and numerous special species may be encountered including Bengal Florican, Greater Adjutant, Black-necked Stork, Pied Harrier, Swamp Francolin and the spectacular Blue-bearded Bee-eater. A number of impressive snakes are also found here and include Reticulated and Indian Pythons, King Cobra and Branded Krait.

Day 19: Kaziranga to Delhi via Guwahati and depart

This morning after another elephant safari, we depart Kaziranga for a 5-hour drive to Guwahati Airport, followed by a connection onto Delhi. Upon arrival at Delhi, we will be assisted to our hotel where we will have time to rest and prepare for onward flights home.

We were very lucky to have such knowledgeable guides, Shadow had the ability to place us in the right spot at the right time when other guides were still thinking about it. It was nice just to sit and observe the interactions.
Great tour, the mix of participants also worked well. Many eyes help spot things which might otherwise be missed (back seats are higher and sometimes you just catch a glimpse that the front seat people miss).

Great communications and customer service.
One of the best trips I’ve been on. The sightings were fantastic, Andre was great, the food phenomenal and the support staff exceptional!
Andre was an excellent guide in all regards and made sure everything went smoothly.

I want to thank all of you at Rockjumper who worked to give me and my six friends the trip of a lifetime! The trip was perfectly planned; we saw a wonderful array of sights in perfect settings and lodgings all throughout the thirteen days. Logistically, everything worked like clockwork and it took all the stress out of traveling.

But without a doubt, what made the trip so incredibly special was our tour guide/leader, Rainer Summers. He not only lead us to the sights, through airports and into the bush but he managed to keep us all together, without losing anyone for more than five minutes – and I can assure you: that was not an easy task. (We really are not senile – just a bit independent).

His knowledge of what we saw and where to take us, especially in Cape Town improved our experience greatly. His knowledge of the wildlife and its social structure and behavior at Mala Mala and in Botswana increased our appreciation of what we saw exponentially. Nothing was too much trouble whether it was showing us how to use binoculars or camera or how to spot birds.

He also made sure that everyone was comfortable and at ease in all situations. He anticipated everyone’s needs and he ensured that we all had what we needed and/or wanted everywhere.

But most of all, Rainer was delightful to be with. He was fun and his wit and sense of humor made him a great companion. He is a tremendous asset to your organization. We all would like to return to Africa and Rockjumper’s tours but we will want to have no one but Rainer with us!!! We cannot envision a tour leader who could top this experience.

So, thank you for arranging the tour and a special thanks for choosing Rainer to be our guide. It was a magnificent experience and a week later, I am still wishing I was in Africa!

Sincerely,
LH
