Rockjumper Wildlife Tours: Destination: Argentina

previous page

Wild and remote, the name Patagonia conjures up images of snow-capped mountains, windswept grasslands, dense forests, and productive seas. During this special tour, we will explore all of these habitats providing some of the world’s finest scenery as a constant and ever-changing backdrop while we seek out the evocative wildlife of the southernmost part of South America.

Our foremost target will be the legendary Puma. Using the best trackers and with access to the very best areas to find them, opportunities for success are high. Southern Chile has an enormous diversity of interesting mammals and we will seek them out as well. Small carnivores are particularly well represented and we have good chances for three species of fox: Darwin’s, Chilla and Culpeo Fox. There are also three species of small cats, all are shy and difficult to see but we will seek out the highly localized Kodkod. We have good chances to see the brightly pattered Patagonian Hog-nosed Skunk and will search for two very localized otter species: Marine and Southern River Otter. We are sure to see large numbers of Guanaco, and will try for some rarer species like Huemul Deer, the tiny Pudu Deer, and the bizarre Hairy Armadillo. Our time spent on and near the enormously rich offshore waters of Patagonia should produce a fabulous array of marine mammals, which could include the mighty Blue Whale and other cetaceans such as Commerson’s and Peale’s dolphins along with South American Sea Lion and South American Fur Seal. The birding is also fabulous, and we hope to encounter King Penguin, Black-browed Albatross, Magellanic Woodpecker, Magellanic Plover, to name but a few of the many highlights
