The Blue Whale is the largest animal on our planet, coming in at up to 30 meters (100 feet) in length, and weighing up to an astonishing 177 tonnes (or 190 tons) – their heart alone weighing up to 180 kilograms (400 pounds). Being in the presence of one of these ocean giants is simply one of the most humbling experiences one can have.
Their persecution during the whaling era has been well documented, and this once abundant species is now regularly found in only a handful of spots scattered around the world. It is also critical to visit these areas at the right time of year. Our Sri Lanka tour is carefully timed to lie within the peak period at one of the most reliable and easily accessible bits of ocean that harbor Blue Whales. Imagine the thrill of hearing that huge quantity of air being taken in as the whale surfaces, revealing a seemingly endless blue-grey mottled back and nub of a dorsal fin. Typically, each whale will surface a few times and then quite often fluke as they make their sounding dive.
With luck, we might see some other marine mammals while out on the ocean. Bryde’s Whale, and Spinner and Bottlenose Dolphins all call these waters home at this time of year as well. Of course, we will also spend much time visiting the wet and dry forests and grasslands of this island nation to take in some of Asia’s best mammal watching. That includes some of the best Leopard and Asian Elephant watching anywhere, along with chances for Sloth Bear, Rusty-spotted and Fishing Cats, and endemics like Golden Palm Civet, Toque Macaque and Purple-faced Langur. Add in the rich history, culture and cuisine, and you have the makings for an amazing tour.
Join us as we venture out for Blue Whales and so much more!
